OCTOBER 2012

The Joseph Campbell Foundation Mythological Roundtable of Ojai presents an evening at the
Ojai Foundation on Thursday, October 4th at 5 pm in the Council House. This month’s topic is
SYMBOL.The cultural, political, and religious importance of symbol is severely overlooked and equally
misunderstood. When symbol is misunderstood, religion becomes dogma, politics become rote agendas, and the soul of a culture is constricted to only the literal and rational values of understanding.
However, when symbols are recognized and appreciated as our liaisons to that which is beyond us, and to that which is within us, they render something far more valuable than intellectual knowledge. They render experience.Symbol offers passage to deep and meaningful experience when it is not restricted to the flatness of denotation and explanation—when we do not grasp to possess it, but rather share presence with it as its own living phenomenon.

Join us for an evening of deep, gentle introspection and sharing, reaching to the experiences that symbols render from somewhere far beyond our reach and deep within ourselves.
